about

this performance took place on april 28th at the draw in appleton, wisconsin.

"composition 23 b" is by anthony braxton and is from the record "new york, fall 1974". It features aidan sponheim on trumpet, koby brown on drums, and jakob heinemann on bass.

"truth object" is a woodwind quartet I composed between march and april. I was inspired to write something I could play with sarah clewett, nathan gornick, and matt wolke. I was excited by the level of control I could have over the music in this idiom. eventually I decided to relinquish some, and the final form, in 3 short movements, is loosely about realizing nothing can be controlled.

at first I had an idea to do a solo saxophone improvisation with electronics on my recital and I had no experience or gear. I met with jason koth to experiment with the pedals and programs he had. it became immediately clear that a collaboration was the way to go. we quickly developed the system we used for this performance. as I play, jason records, modifies, and plays back sounds. he can also manipulate my sounds live. the dialogue is in real-time and lagging simultaneously. this performance was our fourth improvisation together.

-- intermission --

I wrote the next two tunes to play with matt blair and spencer tweedy.

"two step" was inspired by carla bley's compositions on the album "closer" by paul bley.

"elmira" is a love letter to hometowns in memory of someone.

I love improvising with sam because our approaches tend to contrast/complement.

"more" was the longest piece and was difficult to put together. jakob, jeremiah and matt did an amazing job bringing it to life.
